A slideshow shows Ilya Repin’s famous painting ‘Ivan the Terrible and His Son’ after it was vandalised at the The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow on Friday. The painting was damaged by a man who used a metal security post to punch its protective glass and tear the canvas. At a briefing on Monday, the gallery’s director Zelfira Tregulova described the events that occurred last Friday night as “horrific and scary”, adding that the attack “demonstrates the unbelievable degree of aggression that prevails in the society today.” According to the management of the Tretyakov Gallery, the painting will be protected with a special reinforced glass after restoration. The police detained the intoxicated suspect soon after arriving to the scene on Friday. Criminal proceedings against the perpetrator, identified as a 37-year-old man from Voronezh, have been started. The painting has been vandalised once before, in 1913, when painter Abram Balashov managed to cut it with a knife in three places.Famous pieces of art have occasionally been targeted by vandals, including Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in the Louvre and Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus in the National Gallery.
