Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended a ceremony commemorating the 567th anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (present day Istanbul) via videolink on Friday, as Islamic prayers were recited inside the city’s Hagia Sophia museum. Erdogan listened to the Surah of Conquest, read by the Imam Hatibi Ferruh Mustuer in the Hagia Sophia during the commemorations. Models of the historic Walls of Constantinople were also set up outside the building, and graphics of the conquest projected on to them, as part of events held to mark the fall of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The fall of Constantinople, later to be renamed Istanbul by the Ottomans, came as the culmination of the Byzantine-Ottoman Wars (1265-1453). In the years to follow, the Hagia Sophia – an Orthodox Christian church before the fall of Constantinopole – was repurposed into a mosque. Erdogan announced that the anniversary will also be commemorated with the Islamic prayers inside the Hagia Sophia. The announcement drew criticism from neighbouring Greece, whose population is overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian.
