‘We will not leave the people of art unprotected,’ PM Mitsotakis says
“Culture will not be treated as a market product. We will not leave the people of art unprotected,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who attended the first rehearsal of the National Theater for the play “Persians” by Aeschylus, accompanied by Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni, on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 2020, celebrated on May 21. According to government sources, the prime minister talked for more than an hour with the actors in the performance and listened very carefully to their concerns and comments, which more broadly reflect the concerns of the people of art on the way to the resumption of cultural activities in Greece. Mitsotakis also listened to their proposals for solving the long-term problems of the industry that are becoming even more pressing during these difficult days, due to the consequences of the pandemic. The same sources added that Mitsotakis and Mendoni had a lengthy discussion with the artists about the problems of the sector.Mitsotakis stated that the government wants to find a solution to these long-standing problems and gaps that are observed, while emphasising that his interest in this area is genuine and not merely coincidental.
