Police deployed water cannons and teargassed protesters who had gathered in front of the Albanian parliament in Tirana on Saturday to protest against Prime Minister Edi Rama for the eighth consecutive week. Protesters threw flares and explosives at the parliament facade, starting a fire in the process. Albanian President Ilir Meta had earlier cancelled the general elections set to be held on June 30 citing deepening political crisis as a result of the inability of the ruling party and the opposition to hold a fruitful dialogue. Prime Minister Rama reportedly dismissed the President’s decision. Albania has been in political crisis since opposition politicians walked out of parliament in February demanding prime minister Rama resign. Weekly protests in Tirana are threatening the country’s plans to begin accession talks with the EU.
